MSS Cross Border Migrants 07-09

 To ensure protection and rights of vulnerable people who are seeking alternative livelihood strategies and thereby subject to unsafe migration and trafficking, Manav Seva Sansthan-SEVA is implementing the project in Indo-Nepal boarder areas in Bihar and UP. Through Right based Migrant Counseling Centers in Jogbani of Araria distt of Bihar and Thithubari of Maharajgung distt  of UP, MSS is mainly focusing on-

·        Migrants make informed choice based on relevant available information (pre departure situation)

·        Increased recognition and space for social, economic and political rights of informal workers of migrant background(post departure situation) and

·        Increased operational knowledge of the trafficking –migrant nexus among all stakeholders leading to changed policies and attitude

Development Objectives:

To minimize the incidence of exploitation and abuse among cross border women and adolescent (at risk groups) seeking alternative economic opportunities away from their home.

Immediate Objectives:

Ø      To facilitate safe and informed mobility among cross border migrants at transit their by minimizing their vulnerability towards trafficking and abuse during the migration process and at destination point.

Ø      Increased knowledge and awareness leading to enhanced participation and vigilance during migration process and ensuring rights of migrants among cross border stakeholders.

Ø      Increased visibility/priority for the issues related into-country migration and its links with trafficking and natural disaster among cross border local media.

Ø      Mainstreaming broadcasting media to address issues related to migration and migrant rights.

Activities:   Main activities of the project are:

·        Counseling of migrants especially women and adolescents at Right based Migrant Counseling Centers

·        Publication & distribution of IEC materials

·        Cross border Transit level stakeholders meeting

·        Orientation of the NGO partners on setting up community radio & its  role in facilitating informed mobility

·        Orientation of the NGO partners on ways to sustain the community radio

·        Local cross border media sensitization program on migration and its interlinks with trafficking , disaster and HIV

·        Cross Border state level dialogue on migrants and their development

Project Expected Outputs: The project expects following output by the end of the project period:

Þ    Improved response from cross border stakeholders towards risk and vulnerabilities of migrants(women & adolescents)

Þ    Local Media come out with articles that reflects the strong inter-linkages between migration, trafficking, HIV and natural disaster

Þ    Viable systems in place at cross border transit stage leading to safe and informed mobility among at risk migrants

Þ    Effective utilization of broadcasting medium to keep the migrants informed

Þ    Cross border Govt. takes steps to identify appropriate ways and means to ensure the human rights of migrants especially women
