Towards reducing death and disability among children from Japanese Encephalitis(JE) in Chaheri Gram Panchayat

Manav Seva Snasthan- SEVA is implementing Japanese Encephalitis project in Chaheri Gram panchayat in Sadar block of Maharajgunj, 60 KM away from MSS headquarters based in Gorakhpur and 15 km from nearest town Maharajgunj. Chehari is one of the biggest Gram Panchayats in Maharajgunj with a population of 10,500. 95% of the population belonging to undrpriveledge section that includes Other Backward cast (40%) and Scheduled Cast (55%). The gram panchayat has low indictors in terms of literacy, economic condition, public distribution system, health status, food security & participation in development. The project is directly benefitting  2190 children in the age group 6-14 years and indirectly benefitting total GP population , doctors, health service providers, local NGO and panchayat.

Project Goal:

Community, Local self government and service providers empowered in Japanese Encephalitis prevention and Management.

Project Objective:

To secure 2190 children (6-14) from deadly Japanese Encephalitis in 54 villages of Chaheri Gram Panchayat

Project Approach & Strategy:

The project would bring into play the approaches like (a) behavior change, empowerment, community participation (b) institutional & knowledge development (c) Convergence (d) advocacy (e) networks and linkages (f) community based monitoring system.

Project Activities: The following are the activities initiated by project

 

Ø      The project initiated an assessment on the targeted beneficiaries (primary and secondary) to gauge their knowledge, attitude, and practice in represent to JE

Ø      Pre project Cluster Level assembly to share the project with the community, define roles and responsibilities of the community

Ø      GP level stakeholders Meeting

Ø      Cluster Level mass awareness campaign

Ø      Distribution of Medicated mosquito net

Ø      Immunization campaign

Ø      Capacity building program for public and private doctors

Ø      Orientation program for grass roots health service providers

Ø      Orientation program for Panchayat and VHWSC

Ø      Sanitation drive in the village

Ø      Advocacy with district health department

Ø      End line assessment to compare start and end line indicators.

Project Output: The project expects following output by the end of the project period:

·        Improved awareness among the community on the causes, prevention methods to control and eradicate JE.

·        1533 children in age group of 6-14 will have been immunized with full dose of JE vaccine.

·        Improved knowledge among health service providers in basic diagnostic knowledge and treatment of JE at early stage

·        Better accountability among panchayat and village health water and Sanitation committee in addressing JE

·        JE vaccination  incorporated into routine immunization
